OK so here are my thoughts on the episode and thanks to Amber for our 2hr phone conversation to help sort through everything as well.
Had to watch it 2 times to soak it all in.
-WOW where to start. Huzzah for NO shaking camera!!! For once it was great to have that not happen and objects not in the way of the actors.
-Funeral scene Ros's parents and then just the few left from Section D show up. If only the others hadn't died but sad to say same number of people that were at her first "funeral". The poem was very fitting yet surprised that Ruth read it knowing their history. But then again Malcolm wasn't there to read it.
-Ruth oh Ruthie I could just throttle you!! The love of your life asks you to marry you and you say 'No'!! *smack you up side the head woman!* I understand where she was coming in that moment yet at the same time she needs to get over things. Nicola's performance around Peter was just outstanding once again. Just when you think it can't get better it does. The whole "proposal" scene was delivered fantastically. Not only that but throughout the whole of the episode! I do like how Ruth truly is the 'queen of the grid'. I do mean that in a good way. Yes she is the only one who can put Harry in his place yet can command the Grid, welcome people in as well.
The rejection and then the turn around: So from what my gathering is that she rejected him more so out of fact that it wasn't the right timing and too much has gone on between them in the past year. She did stop herself from yet blaming Harry for the death's of not just Ros, Jo or George because she knows it is not his fault. I think a lot of their interaction played heavily on this theme and going back to 8.1. The turn around at the end she knows that Harry needs to make these tough decisions because no one else can, and see the good. In 8.1 she couldn't see that now she can and with her support of Harry this is why he doesn't turn in the resignation fully. Now thankfully Amber and I talked out the 'Roof'. Good for Harry listening and not saying anything I see that as fear of Ruth might change her mind. Ruth doesn't see their lives as normal because that will never be them. Yet she knows that the reality is what they have right now. Still not a full step in the right direction but I'd say more along the lines of 5.3-5.4 but being open. Yes 2mo pass since Ros and they both need time to sort through everything. Ruth finally is seeing Harry through different eyes and the man she knew before who had to make these tough choices all the time but without her being so directly involved as he had others from the Grid to help him sort it out. (does that make sense?) I see this as Ruth's way of sorting out how their relationship will look in reality and the practical side of things. I think this is a good step not a negative and if my one theory is right then all will be happy. Give her time remember this was way more then what we got from s8. Yes I did want to yell "KISS HIM YOU FOOL"!!
Wardrobe for Ruth: I see where they are going with this since s8. Now s8 yes it was all blue and the poor thing. This series with just the first ep I get the colors and solids. To me this is showing and if you look back to say even s4. No pattern this is serious Ruth not carefree. To me this is also showing a mature Ruth and one that has grown. I don't think it would be fitting to give her that old necklace back do like the new one (thanks Kudos for showing that you noticed we missed it). We are seeing an older and wiser Ruth not s2 Ruth.
Ok I'll stop talking about Ruth though I could go on.
-Harry oh Harry you maned up and asked her yet still have yet to say I Love You. WOW Peter's performance just like Nicola's outstanding. The whole "proposal" scene so venerable was Harry so sexy as well and Peter looks fit! I understand why Harry asked Ruth. Life is short and he doesn't want to wast it anymore. I see where he was falling apart as well. First Tom, then Adam and now Ros his only guide left is Ruth his love his constant. I totally get why he pushed Ruth away he is an 'what's the point, and don't argue with me cause this is me needing you so much, but the rejection sent him over the edge'. The whole scene with Blake WOW WOW this revenge was far better then for Adam. The attitude was different the mind set was different. He did remind me a bit of his role in White Angel (minus the dress in drag). The scene was haunting and beautifully acted by both men. This is the first time we see Harry truly loose it yet trying to stay in control. He knows he needs Ruth more then ever and during the rejection up to the roof scene he was a man completely lost. I feel that with her saying no was saying no to just more then them but to his over all actions he takes with his choices he makes. Here he was lost with no one to stand next to him. Ruth was trying throughout finally and at the end she made it clear when he told them to let the bomb go off. She gave him his reasoning his confirmation that he was in the end doing the right thing. For him to keep silent on the Roof was best why mess it up. Hands down fantastic acting between the two of them. BAFTA's for both of them!!
-Lucas better then s8 and loved the blonde line. Tee Hee!!! As much as I'm tired of seeing Lucas past I'm curious now with it. Makes me think that this has a bit of Tom feel to it but with a twist.
-Newbies intro: I thought it was a great intro with the newbies. Something different and fresh. I'm looking forward to seeing how they fit in and poor Ruth having to share a flat with Beth. So much for having Harry come round for a visit. Poor Max Brown with his accent good for him in an interview for not hiding behind the fact that he struggled with it.
-Tee Hee we didn't actual film on location. Reminded me how great Lost was with making other locations while never leaving Hawaii so good for Kudos on that here.
-Better start to a series and a fresh start
I have more to say but I'm done for now. Screen caps to follow soon.
