Ok how have we not talked about this on this forum I'll never know. So I'll start it off. I still haven't seen the scene where Ruth struggles with the lamp at her desk. It isn't in the US version at all and that includes deleted scenes. I think her entrance in the conference room is classic! Plus, it is the first time we really see Harry caught off guard.

Maybe you can get the DVDs from amazon.co.uk? They delivered them to Israel, so I don't see a reason that they won't send them to the US. I think it's worth it in order to get the lamp scene ;D
I think that Ruth in that episode (and in the rest of series 2 actually) was a bit more cheerful and silly then she was in later series, she smiled alot more

OK I stand corrected I'm a total idiot for missing the fact that the lamp scene is in my DVD they did not delete it out. WOW how on earth could I have missed this!!! !!! I'm glad I finally got to watch it. I really liked Ruth from the beginning. Her enthusiasm is what I like and how she just has such a love for her job.

Watching this on PBS right now (so nice to see it on tv). Found a continuity error. Harry's ear piece when Tom goes to meet the guy whom I can't spell his name (hahah). Harry listens in on the convo sitting in the next bench and when he goes to talk to the person the ear piece is gone. Poof just like magic.
I love Malcolm in this ep. so adorable. Picking out the chocolate to eat.

Hiya,
I'm having a similar problem to the first poster on this thread - I can't find the 'Ruth wrestles with lamp' scene in Spooks 2.2. I'm in the UK and downloaded the eps from iTunes, so they must be the UK edit. So I'm a bit confused! Any ideas, all?

I know in the US they deleted it if watched streamed through Netflix DVD rental. But it is on the DVD and when it just aired here on PBS the other night they showed it. If you have the DVD it should show it for sure. I don't know why iTunes would cut it. The scene is right after Tom and Harry are talking in Harry's Office. By the way Welcome.

The scene should definitely be on there somewhere. I bought the Dutch DVD release for series 1 and 2, and while S1 is complete and uncut, they've cut the S2 eps and the lamp scene isn't on it either. Luckily I've stored all files on my external harddrive as well, and that file does have the famous lamp scene. From now on I'm buying the UK DVD releases.
And I agree with you CBJFAN44, Ruth's definitely a lot more cheerful and silly in the earlier episodes. Perhaps it's her enthusiasm about finally joining MI5, something she's wished for for a very long time, and after a while the enthusiasm wears thin after all she's seen and been through. All the things she sees happening and the stuff she and her colleagues have to go through are probably a lot more gruelsome than anything she's seen in her time at GCHQ.

cbj, Thanks for this thread and to phillipa for bumping it!
Harry is so endearing every time Ruth catches him "off guard" as you say, cbj.
And phillipa mentioning that Ruth's enthusiasm has worn thin as she supports all the efforts at MI5, some good, some very bad, is so true. She would be a frighteningly bent sort of person if she wasn't brought low by her work.
*Spoilers* *Spoilers* *Spoilers*
I think that's why she eventually left Harry and MI5 permanently behind (in addition to desiring a family).

I don't think she did it consciously because of that. After all, the decision to take the blame in order for Harry to stay on as Section Head, was a heat of the moment thing. Nor do I think she wanted to leave Harry. Although, out of all the people of Section D I'd say Ruth is the most "normal" in her outlook on life and what she expects from it. When she's talking to Malcolm in 8.1 she tells about how happy she was in Cyrpus, and how simple her life was. She's always wanted a degree of normalcy in her life, something she couldn't have whilst working for MI5. So I wonder how Ruth will go about dealing with things now that she's back in England.

What I like about this episode in terms of Ruth it gives us a great start to character development that is to come. Series 2 Ruth is all about I love my job and say 'dirty bomb' and not wanting to be sent back to GCHQ. Now DCSpook and I have talked about this and I've mentioned it to Nicola. We agree that the character of Ruth could have gone no where if it weren't for Nicola's acting. Ruth could have been another Sam. Over the series she really brought life into Ruth. In other words Ruth could have stayed in this state that she is in during s2 'Bonkers but Brilliant'. As s3, s4, part of 5 and now 8 & 9 Ruth matured still loves doing her job don't get me wrong. The character has grown so much since this episode. Like I said Nicola has done one fantastic job with it. This thread makes me want to watch s2 again for all the classic Ruth moments

I hadn't connected the dots before but she was Sam-like at first. But then, as you said, Nicola infused Ruth with so much more. :-)

I agree completely. But once Ruth was forced away she immediately began to devise a plan and the world "out there" opened up to her. Ruth began to think about making her dreams reality. I can imagine that the idea of being "reborn" in a new place and leaving all the "mess" at MI5 behind was extremely inspiring. These thoughts and plans probably gave her all the strength she needed to leave Harry behind with no talk of love allowed. (Ruth hoping to leave without seeing Harry and then avoiding Harry's talk of love is what signaled to me that a big part of her was already eager to sail away and start her new life, like Abu Nuwas) Thereafter, I don't think she ever thought her future happiness could be found back at MI5, the place of her "bad dreams".
But I do think poor George or any other man had little hope of ever measuring up to Harry.

True. I don't think Ruth ever really loved George. She probably cared for him a great deal, but she wasn't in love with him. This became clear when she refused to answer Harry's question about whether she was in love with him, and just said "he's a good man". I'm sure he was, but for Ruth he paled in comparison to Harry.

(nodding my head as if you can see) From cbj, "In the words of NW "I didn't love George"! Made me smile" ;D I love NW even more now (something I thought wasn't possible). I can hear her say those words in the same voice she used in series 4 (I think) when she told Adam, "I'm not a mole!"

If I remember correctly she did it with a straight face and after she said it had a smile It was said in a matter of fact way. I'm sure she got asked about the whole George thing loads during Mrs. Klein. So glad I waited ages for her to come out of the stage door it was worth it!
