Because someone once wrote, "The Course of True Love does not run smooth." Angstville usually makes better TV anyway.

OK in my very tired state of mind I watched the episode on Sunday when I should have been catching up on some much needed sleep. I will modify this post if I just am not making much sense I'll start with the small things I did not like about the episode. Not much really just a few things. 1) DC and I agree not using steady cam was getting to be a bit much. At least not as bad as season 1 of Lost where that took me all 24 episodes to get used to it. Still steady cam is a wonderful thing for the love just use it!!! 2) Sarah (aka Christine Dale 2.0) For a second I thought her accent was going to be better NOPE!! My ears just want to bleed every time I hear her talk. French and Saunders have better American Accents. Now I did like the reunion between Richard and Mr. Bell (from N&S) who had a better American accent. So far best American accent by a male on the show and he is not American! 3) Lucas and Sarah I'm sooo sorry but no chemistry what's so ever. Richard really tried with that last scene to save it so props to RA. I've seen better chemistry between two leads in a high school play back when I was in high school and the male lead was gay. That is saying a lot as it is very hard to get two teens to pretend to like each other. 4)I've come to accept that Americans are going to be portraed as jerks. I was hopeful that things might have changed. Oh, well just know that the show is reflecting our government and not the population. So the Stuff I liked and noticed 1) YEA for Gandalfgrey1979 when he first posted seeing Harry and Ruth because we finally got to see that. That first scene between Harry and Ruth brilliant acting once again. I like how Harry was trying yet telling Ruth that he has to be limited self control. At least Ruth knows that to be true. Ruth has changed I see her being more confident yet still broken from what just happened. There is still some distance between them. Even when they apologized to each other. Between tone of voice and body language there is still going to be a lot of healing that needs to happen. Will they just kiss and make up PLEASE!!! 2) Harry does not seem to be himself gee that goes off of what Gandalf said and some of us thought it would have something to do with Ruth. BINGO we were right. A few things I noticed about Harry. He seems lost, broken, and not himself without Ruth. The reunion between them really was not of course under the best circumstances. He really is trying to get her back to make the wrong things right. To make it clear Harry was on his mobile in his office: Now I think Harry was on his mobile with Ruth. Here is why: 1) Harry never makes personal phone calls at work 2) When he is on his mobile on the Grid it is used to contact someone in the field 3) When he is off the Grid his mobile use is always work related 4) His body language read to me that he was on a personal call. He was not in work mode of being in control no matter what. He looked to me like he was trying desperately to communicate with the person on the other end that was not someone high up that would have nothing to do with the current operation Harry finally went to the Home Secretary about Ruth!!!!! Can not wait to see how Ruth reacts to being brought back to work where she belongs. 3) Jo what an episode for her! Loved the scene between her and Ruth. Ruth looking lost on the steps. Jo tells her how much they all missed her and especially Harry and telling her that Harry had to do the right thing in such tough circumstances. Jo with Bibi it was great that she really understood what was going on. The way she was able to persuade her to shoot the guy when she almost did not. Jo and Harry's scene together even though she went behind Harry's back he was still very grateful. Great episode for Jo finally too bad it won't last for long 4)New kid still has to win me over. Great that he can do all kinds of new stuff but he is not Malcolm or Colin. I want Malcolm back! *tries to not cry all over again 5)Ros is just kicking some ass and that is awesome!!! 6)The whole Ruth married/not married the whole thing I started to get confused by it all. She was happy but she was not in love that is for sure. So does this also mean that Nico's mother is dead or what if he goes to live with his aunt? Ruth didn't seem to broken up about it. Once she and George were in England it just seemed that they became more distant. 7)Pacing of the episode. I have noticed that the pace and editing has become very quick. Slow when it calls for it and fast when it calls for it. There is a balance that is there but just something that I've noticed that has come about since s7. The next two eps. are with different directors and writers so we shall see how they are put together That is all I can think of but will be re-watching it again. I just want Harry and Ruth to kiss and make up is that too much to ask for? ?

Ratings down for last night. But if they would take into consideration that most people watched episode 2 on Friday last week on BBC3 plus last night people watched it on iPlayer as well. www.digitalspy.com/tv/news/a186527/bbc-ones-spooks-draws-45m.htmlFrom my understanding during the first week the iPlayer servers crashed due to the volume of people watching for episode 1 and 2.

Oh, the questions we have about Ruth.
1) She says in ep. 1 that Nico is her son. Then in ep. 2 we get the nice confusion of 'not really anything'. So does this mean she feels that way after George got the bullet in the back of the head and now Nico is living with his auntie?
2) Did she go back to Cyprus to finish up work? She said 'Worked' as in past tense.
3) Did she go to George's funeral? If so where was that? England or Cyprus?
4) Where has she been living since she came back to England? Love to think she has been staying with Malcolm and Harry gave her back her cats.
5) What has she been doing since she has been back in England? We know watching the news for sure.
6) How come no one seems to comfort her about what she went through? Granted yes Harry had to make a tough decision but still come on she did lose her everything again for the second time.
Feel free to add on to the questions

Oh, Last time I checked Franklin was never president unless they are using Roosevelt's first name.

Ok - so here's my thoughts on Ep.2-
This is such a Ruth/Harry episode. It's the B-plot (as it should be!) but it directly affects the A-plot. Harry's inability to move on and deal with - as Ros calls it - "The Ruth Issue" spills over and onto The Grid. And I love the writers for this!
The opening scene where they quickly dispense of Nico - off to live with his Aunt and the bombshell of sorts that Ruth and George were not married. I do believe Ruth loved George, not with the same soul-mate intensity she loves Harry with - but in a comfortable companion sort of way. The fact that they were not married leave Ruth with no legitimate claim to Nico and to her house or her life in Cyprus. "I'm not anything."
I feel a bit cheated on this one, part of me really wants Ruth to realize she wants to come back to Harry and the Grid on her own - because that's where she belongs!!!
But back to the scene on the bridge where all this information is coming from . . . and some really fine acting by NW and PF. He's so awkward and unable to say what she needs to hear from him. And she's so heartbroken and numb. I really think that's the lack of worry about Nico - she does love her "step-son" but she's just lost him and my guess is the quiet hasn't settled in her head yet.
This said, I'm almost positive after reviewing ep. 1 that had George lived, Ruth would be in the same boat. I doubt George could have let the issue go and their relationship would have deteriorated.
Again NW and PF with the little gestures and inflections sell this scene. And as always it's far too short.
Then we see how Harry's carrying the heartache with him to work. Even Ros notices. I never thought I'd say this but Ros is all warm and fuzzy compared to Arctic!Harry. Please Ruth! Forgive him!
The Jo/Ruth scene is lovely. Nice to see Ruth reconnecting with Grid members. The dialog is beautiful. And poor Ruth sitting on the steps - she looks so small- you get the sense that she's in no-man's land. She grieving and angry with the one person she should be able to get comfort from - and its heartbreaking. She can't move forward, she can't move back. She's not alive, but not dead. Makes me wonder if there's anyone she can talk to - even if her mom is still alive - its not like Ruth can ring her up and get some emotional support. So, it's nice to see Jo reaching out and nudging Ruth in the healing direction.
"We're in a very bad place right now." That's right Ruth! Keep thinking in the direction of "we" as in "in this together!"
"Harry ok-ed that?" I love it. She's angry with him, knew he would let Nico die and the second he's stepped over the edge, she can't quite believe it. I think this is the moment where she lets most of the anger go. She still (and will always) have faith in him. Heart.
"Harry's not himself right now." Oh, Jo! "What do you want from me?" Does she doubt that she can fix this?
"But no one's better than you at putting across a different perspective." "Doesn't always work, believe you me." She looks sooooo tired, as if she just can't fight it any longer -
"We've missed you, Ruth. We've missed you badly, but no one more than Harry." Awww. Who didn't melt?
. . .and off to Harry she goes.
The expression on PF's face when he sees her on the second bridge scene - its like he still can't believe she's real - as if she might disappear.
"We need to talk." "I'm glad you said that." It's interesting to note - Harry's the boss, but Ruth runs the relationship. Hands down. From start to stop, he seems to only go as far as she'll let him. He's so gentle with her! *Sniff!*
This scene was faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar to short! As always, I could watch them all day. And you know they spent hours talking. They had to have . . .
Thank you Jo!
And the Jo/Harry scene at the end. So touching. Harry checking in with his team. Asking Jo to check in with Ruth - to win her back! And the catch in his voice when she agrees to help!
Ok, I'm officially a pile of goo. Here's hoping Ep.3 continues the R/H reconciliation!

Fantastic episode. The small interlude with Jo and Harry discussing Ruth...so sweet. The mobile phone call Harry made...can't lip read worth a darn..but I have a feeling it could be about Ruth. Part of me wants to think he could be calling Malcolm. Our buddy has retired, but what if he actually is the only person Ruth interacts with, outside of members of The Grid. Maybe Harry's calling Malcolm to look after Ruth or to check up on her.
The slow embers of their reconciliation is growing. Just need to right spark to set it aflame again.

I was thinking about how easy it seemed that Harry talked to the Home Secretary about bringing Ruth "from the dead". I will say goes back to my thinking on how there was no evidence to suggest that she did what she did. *see what I wrote on the Series 5 Thread*
